The Little Mermaid is a statue depicting a mermaid, in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. Based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen, the small and unimposing statue is a Copenhagen icon and has been a major tourist attraction since 1913.

As a true travel photographer at heart, the statue holds a specific awe as I remember always spending my nights out in Copenhagen walking around and taking pictures of the night life and the buildings. For some strange reason I always ended up here at the mermaid at around 5am when the sun started to rise. I can still remember the feeling of wonder looking at the mermaid. In this picture, I wanted to capture the feeling of the mermaid as she looks out over the ocean. The calm and serenity of the morning. I am sure that those who travelled with me, felt the same about her. In the next few weeks I will be showcasing some more Copenhagen memories and moments, so stay tuned and see what comes next.

Image of the Week 12-18 May 2013

My true love of photography has always been with capturing everyday moments as they happen and trying to see the symmetry and beauty in life and what surrounds us.

I was travelling through Denmark and was spending time in their capital Copenhagen. What a stunningly beautiful city and very modern compared to most other cities that I have been to over the years. As with most of  my travels, I always try to do things the locals do. In this case it was using the local subway train system. As I was exiting one of the subway stations on my way to the Tivoli Gardens, I turned around just before the exit and was presented with the sight you see in the picture. All of a sudden, I could see what the designers had intended with the flow of people and the symmetry of the lines as the escalators disappeared into the distance. All while being juxtaposed by the large old fashioned clock beckoning the arrival of new transit passengers to hurry along for fear of missing their train. It was for me the perfect marriage between old and new, form and function.

Pix Magazine Publication

Image of the Week 5-11 May 2013

I was surprised and flattered to have one of my travel images submitted and published in the Pix Magazine for Feb/March 2013. It felt strange seeing my image published in Africa’s leading Photographic and Imaging Magazine, and I must admit it was very humbling.

I always liked the image, but never knew anyone else liked it too. The image was taken on one of my travels to Scandinavia, in this case Stockholm. I will never know who the gentleman was, but I can still see him walking away from me allowing me to capture this image I dubbed “Stockholm Wanderer”
